漆重 (urushiome) : Art You Can Live With

Timeless Japanese Craftsmanship, Reimagined for Today

Welcome to 漆重 (urushiome) — a brand rooted in centuries of Japanese lacquer tradition and reimagined for contemporary living. Every urushiome creation is more than furniture: it is functional art shaped by heritage, precision, and philosophy.

Our mission is to bring the depth of Japanese culture into the heart of modern homes through pieces that inspire quiet reflection, evoke serenity, and elevate everyday rituals.

What is 漆重 (urushiome)?

漆重 (urushiome) means “Layered Lacquer.”

  • 漆 (urushi): The centuries-old Japanese lacquer art, prized for its deep gloss, resilience, and natural beauty.
  • 重 (ome): “Layers upon layers”—the depth, weight, and stories that accumulate in every handcrafted surface.

Together, urushiome embodies our passion for crafting furniture that is at once modern and heirloom-worthy: each piece a testament to centuries of Japanese lacquer mastery, elevated by our proprietary embedding technique and finished with authentic hardware.

Urushi Lacquer, Reimagined

We use natural urushi (漆), a revered material found in temples, tea houses, and traditional art for over 9,000 years. Hand-applied in layers, it builds a finish of depth, warmth, and subtle sheen.

Material Embedding Technique

Gold-leaf momiji, chiyogami, and natural elements are embedded within the lacquer itself, not merely on the surface. The result is dimensional beauty with visual depth and lasting integrity.

Authentic Japanese Kanagu (金具)

Our tables are finished with genuine kanagu, traditional Japanese metal fittings, often reclaimed or handcrafted in historic workshops. These details lend narrative, age, and character to each piece.

Designed to Inspire, Built to Endure

urushiome pieces are functional sculptures, designed for presence and created with care. They embody:

  • The subtle beauty of shibui
  • The quiet mystery of yūgen
  • The lasting value of true heirlooms

幽玄の雰囲気を醸し出す。時を離れる。

To evoke a yūgen-like stillness — a moment that slips gently beyond time.

The urushiome Process

Each urushiome piece involves a thoughtful balance of technique and tradition. From embedded gold leaf and chiyogami inlays to meticulous lacquer layering and finishing.

Every step reflects design harmony and purpose, guided by architectural-level precision and a deep respect for Japanese craft.

Why Lacquer?

Urushi lacquer is Japan’s oldest artistic material, prized for its resilience, organic beauty, and luminous finish.

Natural urushi is:

  • Eco-conscious and biodegradable
  • Resistant to water, heat, and UV
  • Capable of producing unparalleled tactile depth

urushiome celebrates this heritage by pairing urushi’s elegance with modern form and function.

A Legacy You Can Live With
