Handcrafted in Vietnam: A Fusion of Heritage and Precision

From Material Selection to Lacquering, Perfected by Skilled Artisans

All our pieces are handcrafted in Saigon using Vietnam’s esteemed Son Mai lacquer tradition. This craft has flourished for centuries, producing some of the world’s finest lacquer known for its durability and brilliant sheen. Our process begins with carefully chosen wood, shaped and prepped by dedicated artisans, followed by multiple rounds of lacquering—each cured, sanded, and polished before the next coat is added. Decorative touches like maki-e details or gold and silver powders may then be embedded, ensuring each piece gains a multi-dimensional, deeply personal finish. Finally, a thorough quality check—supervised by Michio Fujinami—confirms that every KOSEI product lives up to its promise of genuine heritage and modern excellence.

  • Material Selection

Each KOSEI piece begins in Vietnam, where skilled artisans meticulously select premium wood to ensure every creation reflects durability and precision in design.

  • Lacquering

Layers of natural urushi lacquer are carefully applied, cured, and polished by expert hands to achieve a flawless finish. This intricate process spans weeks, creating a lustrous, resilient surface.

  • Finishing Touches

Decorative techniques such as Kanagu Metal Fittings (金具) and embedded cultural motifs elevate every piece into a functional work of art, merging tradition with modern craftsmanship.

  • Quality Check

Before each piece is shipped, it undergoes a thorough in-house quality inspection supervised by Michio Fujinami, ensuring it meets KOSEI’s exceptional standards of artistry and precision.
