Strategy Meets Artistry. The Kuro Iris Go Set elevates the timeless game of Go into a living showcase of Japanese lacquer mastery. Designed by architect-artist Michio Fujinami and crafted to order, this set mirrors the refined elegance of the Kuro Iris Table—perfect for display or play.

What Is the Kuro Iris Go Set?

A limited-edition addition to urushiome's Kuro Iris series, this handcrafted set includes a full-size 19×19 Go board and matching bowls (stones not included). The board is fashioned from premium hardwood and finished in deep black urushi lacquer with polished kanagu (金具). Each bowl, lacquered in radiant gold, bears the signature kakitsubata (燕子花) motif in genuine kinpaku (金箔) gold leaf. Together, they transform every match into a ceremony of art.

Why You'll Love It

A Living Masterpiece

  • Inspired by one of Japan’s most iconic artworks, this set connects you to the poetic beauty of Tales of Ise and classical Rinpa design.

Crafted with Precision

  • Hand-lacquered with natural urushi (漆) and layered using urushiome's material-embedding technique, each iris is sealed beneath the surface for lasting depth and glow.

Functional Elegance

  • Built from sturdy hardwood and coated in scratch-resistant lacquer, the board and bowls endure daily use while preserving museum-quality artistry.

Cultural Storytelling

  • The iris motif represents renewal, elegance, and literary tradition—evoking a calm presence that enriches any interior.

The Story Behind the Design

Inspired by Ogata Kōrin’s “Kakitsubatazu”

  • The Kuro Iris Go Set pays homage to the celebrated folding screen “Kakitsubatazu” (燕子花図) by Rinpa master Ogata Kōrin (尾形光琳). His composition of irises—depicted in blue-purple clusters against gold leaf—embodies the harmony of nature and artistry.

A Tribute to "Tales of Ise"

  • Kōrin’s irises themselves reference a waka from the Tales of Ise (伊勢物語), composed as noble poets crossed the Yatsuhashi (八つ橋) bridge. This rhythmic floral arrangement signifies renewal and poetic grace.

Reimagined for Ritual and Play

  • We’ve distilled these classical motifs into a Go set that’s both functional and sculptural. The glossy lacquer and embedded gold-leaf irises create a focal point where history meets contemporary living—and every move becomes part of the tradition.

Guided by Vision, Rooted in Craft

Architectural Elegance

漆重 (urushiome) is shaped by the vision of Michio Fujinami (藤波美知男)—a renowned Japanese architect whose works span over 150 projects across Asia. With deep reverence for Japanese aesthetics, he brings a design philosophy that fuses architectural discipline with timeless beauty, guiding each urushiome creation with clarity and intention.

More Than Furniture. A Legacy.

Why urushiome

urushiome creates functional art rooted in Japan’s lacquer tradition. Every tray, table, and sculpture carries the quiet soul of urushi and Japanese heritage—designed to bring presence, depth, and refinement into everyday life. Each piece is built to age gracefully, inviting you to live with something meaningful.

Heritage, Reimagined

Crafted Tradition

Our designs draw from centuries of urushi lacquerware and classical forms, then reinterpreted with contemporary lines and quiet elegance. urushiome’s signature aesthetic reflects restraint, harmony, and the Japanese ideal of shibui—subtle beauty that reveals itself over time.

The Art of Urushi

Natural Lacquer

Each piece is coated with genuine urushi (漆)—Japan’s oldest artistic material. Sustainably harvested, layered by hand, and polished to a luminous depth, urushi is more than a finish: it is a living surface that glows with age, use, and presence.

Handcrafted. Layer by Layer.

Artisanal Process

Every urushiome piece is shaped through meticulous, hand-layered craftsmanship. Dozens of urushi layers are applied, cured, and polished by artisans, revealing a depth and luster impossible to replicate. These are future heirlooms, created with care and soul.

Cultural Finishes, Timeless Details

Signature Embellishments

Our pieces are adorned with finishing touches drawn from Japanese cultural traditions—gold-leaf momiji, maki-e (蒔絵) designs, and Yūzen (友禅) inlays. Each element is placed with precision, telling a story through subtle contrast and visual harmony.
